Ergonomic utility knife

Spring 2021 - Year 2

Class focus: Ergonomics.

Prompt: Design an ergonomic utility knife in a two week timeframe.

Getting in the shoes of the user

I used an existing utility knife to test how I was able to carry out task under various impediments that users may encounter.

Taped fingers: Simulating hand disabilities.

Using the knife with thick gloves.

Form exploration

My focus was on creating forms that would help keep the wrist in a neutral position.

Testing comfort

Having multiple ways to hold the knife allows the user to discover how they can work best with the tool.

Neutral wrist position = More comfort

Slight refinements

Greater stability

Thinner main body feels better in the hand.

More finger space

The slider no longer interferes with the index finger when doing high precision cuts.

Ambidextrous

Symmetric design with a thumb grip area on both sides of the knife allows for right and left handed people to use the knife in the same exact way.
